Why Platelets?

Platelets are tiny cells in your blood that form clots and stop bleeding. For millions of Americans like Luca, they are essential to surviving and fighting cancer, chronic diseases, and traumatic injuries. Every 15 seconds, someone needs platelets.

Luca Is Now in Remission Thanks to Platelet Donors

Meet Luca! He was diagnosed with a Stage IV Wilms tumor on New Year’s Eve 2019 and required several units of platelets during chemotherapy. He is now a happy, thriving little boy who loves action figures and his superhero-themed bedroom. Watch his story now.

Common Platelet Questions

Does It Hurt?

At the beginning of the donation, you may only experience a brief pinch from the needle, while throughout the process, you should feel the sense of fulfillment, knowing that you are making a positive impact on patients within your community.

Can you feel the love?

Connie and her husband turned their evening together into a 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆𝒔𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 “𝑫𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝑵𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕” by donating blood on the Big Red Bus. It was his first time donating!

What Are the Benefits of Platelet Donation?

Your donation is making a patient feel stronger right away. A smaller needle is used for a platelet donation, and after apheresis, most of your blood comes back to you, along with saline. This helps keep you hydrated and reduces tiredness.

Platelet Donations Make All The Difference

There are so many reasons to give platelets. Here are just a few from patients who recieved their platelets from a OneBlood platelet donor.

“Hello, I'm about to turn 14 and I have cancer in the form of leukemia. I just wanted to say thank you for your giving of platelets, you definitely helped me by this donation and I'm very grateful.”

“Dear Blood Donor - On behalf of my entire (very large) family, I thank you so much for your caring and generous donation of blood. Your donation has given my godmother, the strength to fight off a raging infection in her body. We are a family of first responders and are used to helping other people, but in this case, you were a first responder for us. Your time and donation are greatly appreciated. Thank you, again!”

“I am getting a bag of platelets right now and thanking God for wonderful people like you! Thank you for making the effort and especially for taking the time to do a platelet donation. I and my loved ones appreciate it so much! God's blessings.”
